More jacket

Today was the day for yet another...

Jacket!

But this time round, it's a wind breaker. I think after stuffing all the winter wear in, my luggage will be full already. No need for all the other barang barang. But then parents think it's important, so it shall be! I'll just wear my jackets and run around bottomless... Yikes! Not a very good sight. Lol...

The important things to get! Adapters and extension plugs!

More space taken from my precious 30kg luggage! *sobs* But these are essentials la. At most, I'll just lessen the number of shoes. So sad man...

This thing supposedly allows all kinds of plugs to go in.

3-pin. The kind they use in Australia and New Zealand.

I never knew these things are so cheap! I thought they would cost like $20+ at least. Very important for us because we need to charge this and charge that. Power the laptop also! Sianz... I only have 20MB for my Internet access; excess usage will be charged accordingly. Bah! How to blog and keep my readers interested like that??? :P

Long Johns - Not the fast food variety

My loving parents headed down to Chinatown and got me these!

Thermal underwear!

Looks so soft right? I almost went and wore them in Singapore. Will be like a sauna sia... Hahaha... I don't think it will be very cold in Australia though, since I'm not going to Melbourne where it will be colder. Even those selling at Robinson's (Specialist Center) didn't look so soft lor!

Check them out! Poreless sia! Even without photoshopping! Heh heh...

Of med check-ups

My flight tix is almost booked! The agency did not tell me how to pay up the remaining sum for the flight and I guess, until I have the ticket in my hand, I cannot say for sure the flight I will be on. With the day of departure not too far off, some friends have been asking me whether I have started to pack or have noted down the things I need to bring.

No I haven't!

That's how lazy I am. I'm still enjoying sleeping and lazing around, doing nothing and waiting for people to ask me out. And trying to choose the shoes to bring over to Aus. And the bags. Yeah... I know I'm going to study not have a fashion show... But I'm a girl! Hahaha... Anyway, had to apply for my electronic visa (That was like a whole session of Q&A... "Do you smoke?" "Are you an alcoholic?") and with that, I have to go for medical check-up as well. So bloody expensive!

Since I was advised to go for the check up as soon as possible so that I can get my visa (A$410), I went for the x-ray immediately after the visa application. X-ray (S$52.75) was over in a flash (literally). Had to remove long earrings, metal parts and hair cannot touch my shoulders etc. Need to stand in front of the machine and act like a hen (read: hands on hips). And you don't get to see it. Why doesn't the visa cover the medical check-up fees as well?!

After that, I had to wait for 1.5-2hrs before going for the health check-up at another location (imagine the amount spent on transport)! So mama and I went to check out skincare since we were warned of the harsh UV rays down under and the dry winter air. That's another S$199 spent on moisturisers and whatnots from Biotherm. Very sick when I see all these bills. Fucking taxing my dad's savings. I feel so guilty. So I really have to do them proud for my studies.

After a round of

with mama, it's back to town for the medical check-up. I never knew that Paragon houses "medical suites" where there are quite a few specialists. We were assigned the clinic to do the examination, so that's S$47.50 gone. But I made sure that I got my money worth by asking for 3 cups of water (It's not that la! Had to do urine test but had no urine in me. I forgot that when I went to NUS, we had all these as well.). Then one of the clinic assistant measured my height and told me I was 160cm. WHAT THE HELL?! That's like my primary 5 height?! I'm at least 168 now ok!!! Turned out there was some mistake in setting up the measuring apparatus. So 168 I was. Flaring up gets you everywhere. Sometimes.

On the way home, I kept wanting to pee. I wonder why. +_+

The big electronic monster

Today was the day to buy

The mango pudding!

Yeah... Had to buy a laptop! Never really liked laptops because I think their screens are very glaring. I think there is something very comforting about a desktop. It is big (I using the big backside kind la... No LCDs...), and it's big... I like to type on keyboard of the desktop because I can bang on it and no worry whether it is going to spoil my chip or whatever shits you have inside the laptop. But for this trip, I guess I need a laptop. Sure, I can get a desktop over at Australia. What would happen to it when I'm heading back to Singapore? Not economical to ship it back! So getting a cheap laptop would be a good idea since I don't need all the bells and whistles like 1GB RAM and whatnots. The specs of my Acer TravelMate 4152LMi:

- Intel Pentium M 740 processor (2MB L2 Cache, 1.73GHz, 533MHz FSb)
- 15.0" XGA TFT LCD (Yay! Not a big backside!)
- 128MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 w/TurboCache technology
- 60GB HDD (Wow! My lousy desktop had only 20GB! Yes, I know that it was pathetic...)
- DVD-Dual double layer (Support DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+RW)
- 512MB DDR2 (support dual channel)
- 802.11b/g wireless LAN

Right... I know almost nothing about what the above stuff do. Not even with an A- for Intro to Computing. What got me excited was the 6-in-1 card reader because I don't need to fret about transferring my pics from my storage cards. Yay! And my infra technology so I can finally transfer the pics from my mobile to a computer! And to show you how boring clubbing is (or how 3" boots are not meant for dancing the night away), I took these with my mobile's 1.3megapixel camera:

Red hot DBLO

Blue cool Phuture

So Acer was S$2238 with a promotional $49 MS Office. Very lazy to transfer things from my desktop ah! The very first things I moved over? The photos of course! I want things I am familiar with when I'm feeling homesick! Going alone sure has its cons.

Then mama also got me these:

Small one

Big one

Which came in:

Japan wan leh!

They are laundry bags! For you to separate your delicates from other clothes when you throw them all into the washing machine. I have no idea how to do my laundry. Like my mama said, I only know how to buy and wear clothes. I hate washing and hanging clothes! The worst of all is to fold and iron them! I thought of an ingenious idea about how to iron my clothes. Maybe I'll blog about it on the other blog someday. The bigger bag (S$3.50) can be used for knits or woollen materials while the smaller bag (S$2.80) will be suitable for lingerie. Mama thought of everything! Maybe I should just send them to the laundry and save her the trouble? I think if I do my own washing, the clothes all have to be thrown away pretty fast. But I cannot be a spoilt brat! I must learn to wash and iron (fold no need la... Just throw the whole pile in my room) my clothes!

Another important purchase is this:

I like red and black!

The thick, woollen jacket! Actually daddy no need to worry. I have lots of woollen stuff because I like to wear them in my air-con room and pretend that it's winter. And today, he asked me whether I need more! This would be quite enough and it's a real steal at S$55 from Polo Ralph. It actually printed "PJC" (as in Polo Jeans & Co.) on the top right corner of the jacket. Pioneer JC sia... Girls can wear pants there right? Not bad, not bad.

Actually I'm wondering what else people wear for winters in Australia other than jeans. It would be so boring to only wear jeans and give up my Abercrombie minis.

Tell me what to wear!

I have a very sharp pain in my lower back.

Tell me what is wrong?!

Of applications

I have already spent a lot for the Australia study trip! And preparing for it is no mean feat! Luckily I have a friend who is into her 2nd semester at Perth and I can consult her about stuff, especially the number of shoes to bring! I think I shall take photos of all my shoes and bags before going so I can look at them while I'm in Queensland. I'll miss my babies!

Have to apply for the universities I am interested in and some of them require you to pay application fees. Like University of Queensland (A$50) and Queensland University of Technology (A$55). Ultimately I was accepted by both universities but my heart is really set on the former.

Pretty UQ

Then before applying, I went to 2 Australian Universities fairs, at Orchard Hotel and at Suntec. The one at Orchard Hotel only had a few universities and I went to make enquiries about Royal Melbourne University of Technology (RMIT). It requires you to have an academic reference for enrolment into its communication course! And I managed to find a very nice ex-lecturer/tutor who agreed to help me with the letter (although I did not need one eventually because I never apply!). The latter was heavily advertized in newspapers and on television (maybe heavily is a matter of perception because I had been looking out for such fairs). It was one with a lot of universities and I was told that application on the spot would be free (but I did not verify that). So if you are thinking of saving some money, you should bring your certificates with you. Save where you can! Replies from the universities may take about 2-4 weeks or longer.

Other than the fairs, you can find some education agencies that can help you with your information search. I received my help from IDP. It can assist you in most of the documents (Student Visa, universities applications, flights etc) you require for your trip. And it also notified me of the events that may be of interest to me, such as pre-departure seminars (Very useful! A starter for getting used to Australian slang at least.) and visiting professors from various universities.

Applications do not stop at the universities only. You may need to find your own accommodation (for certain universities/courses, especially for postgraduates). This is where you thank the Internet because all the accommocation available on campus can be viewed online (at least for UQ). There's a problem with applying for hostels though. Usually they require you to submit your payment before you are given an opportunity to check out the facilities. So all you have are a bunch of professionally taken photographs of the lodging in question. How much the reality deviates from the pics is a matter of luck. Most of these applications have to be through snail mail, so it's a good idea to search well in advanced.

I very heng sia! I got the last room available at the hostel of my choice. So that's the end of the search for me. It was all very exciting! I emailed the person in charge for the details on application procedure. Then I went to bed. But my sixth sense was very good. I couldn't sleep and felt that I should check my email at 9AM (SG time). Very amazing because I seldom rise before 12PM during holidays. So I dragged myself out of bed and saw the reply email which informed me that only one room was available and the first person to complete the application will get the room. Super sian!!! I need to submit not one but TWO references!!! Luckily, my ex-lecturer/tutor was online and I sought his help (which he agreed to without a moment hestitation! Thank you sir!). 15 minutes later, I had my electronic references and the completed application form which I promptly emailed to the lady in charge with an explanation that I will snail mail the documents to her as soon as possible. So here we go:

The S$1.30 postage fee for mailing the 3 pieces of papers and an envelope

It costs over S$20 to mail the same thing by courier (2-4 working days)! Wah lao! It's so light lor. I decided to go by normal mail (7-11 working days) and hope that the lady will accept my application through email. Wise choice, because I received an email from her stating that my email application was sufficient and the last room was mine. Wahahahahahahaha!!! I'm going to stay in this pretty hostel!

No lao kok kok places for me!

Then I had to pay A$5020 (including A$600 bond and electricity, gas, internet access, telephone service, some periodic cleaning and annual carpet cleaning) for 1 semester's stay till 31st Dec. And to accept the offer from UQ, the payment of A$8871 (A$8400 for one semester's fees + A$471 for 18 month Health Cover) has to be made.

And need to book air tickets! But I think it has gone down considerably. SQ flight to Brisbane costs S$890 for 2-way. Paid the S$150 security deposit already but they haven't called me to confirm the flight details yet. Hmmm...

Hope that's the end of the high costs man.

FAQ

Who are you?

Be my friend?
I am the Sunday-Timed, trice-tomorrowed, JLLT of Crap & Such from Singapore. I like to overgeneralize and bullshit about anything and everything. Gossiping and bitching are among my favorite activities and like most girls, I love shoes and bags! Oh! I'm not rich, so don't think about kidnapping me.

What is this blog about?
I'm going to Australia to further my studies! Queensland, Brisbane to be exact. And I think that since I am going to spend so much (of dad's savings) on it, I should really document it. In the most practical of terms: money! This blog is for me to keep track of the necessary expenses for Australia and at times, some unnecessary purchases. You can read my crappy shits at the other blog.

What are those gastly blue patches in your wallpaper?
Those are my badly drawn outlines of Australia!

I even remembered to include Tasmania!

Why are the timestamps on your blog so funny?
I have set it to Brisbane time, that is 2 hours ahead of Singapore. Need to remind myself of my bedtime while blogging!
